Short answer
You can explore Singapore's shophouses on self-guided heritage trails or guided walking tours in Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Kampong Glam, Little India and Joo Chiat. The National Heritage Board publishes heritage trails, and several museums sit in or beside conserved shophouse districts.

Neighbourhoods for a shophouse walk
| Neighbourhood | Theme | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chinatown & Telok Ayer | Early Chinese settlement, clan houses, places of worship | Compact and walkable |
| Kampong Glam | Malay and Arab heritage | Near the Malay Heritage Centre |
| Little India | Indian heritage | Near the Indian Heritage Centre |
| Joo Chiat & Katong | Peranakan and Eurasian heritage | Colourful façades and tiles |
| Emerald Hill | Early 20th-century terraces | Residential; be respectful |
How to plan a trail
- Check NHB's heritage trails and the museums' current opening hours.
- Go early or late to avoid heat and crowds.
- Look up: upper-floor ornament, pediments and shutters tell the story.
- Pair a walk with a museum visit in the same district.
What to notice
Look for the five-foot way, timber shutters, decorative tiles, pilasters and the contrast between styles across eras. Our URA buyer manual explains the conservation fabric in more detail.
